Transition deadline calendar

On this page

The mandatory transition dates that affect ASCB-accredited conformity assessment bodies. Always confirm the current dates for any standard directly at iso.org.

Two different kinds of date matter, and they are not interchangeable. An "assessments may continue until" date is a grace window: ASCB will still assess against the prior edition up to that point, even though a new edition has published. A "transition deadline" is the date set by the standard's publisher or scheme owner: after it, the prior edition is withdrawn and certificates against it are generally no longer accepted as current by third parties.

ASCB's own practice recognizes that bodies seek accreditation for different reasons, including self-improvement. Where a body's system against a withdrawn edition continues to work well for it, ASCB may continue to assess against that edition. A body doing so acknowledges that accreditation presented as evidence to a third party expecting the current edition may not be accepted. New applicants are assessed against the current edition.

The status of standards still moving through ISO's development process is on the Active standards revisions tracker.

    Current transition dates

ISO/IEC 17020:2026 (inspection bodies). Published 27 March 2026. ASCB mandatory transition date: March 27, 2029; assessments may continue against the 2012 edition during the transition.

ISO/IEC 17024:2026 (certification of persons). Published, replacing the 2012 edition. ASCB mandatory transition date: March 31, 2029; assessments may continue against the 2012 edition during the transition.

ISO 19011:2026 (guidance for management system auditing). Published, replacing the 2018 edition. ISO 19011:2026 is a guideline, so there is no transition period: it applies from publication.

ISO 9001:2026 (quality management systems). Published September 16, 2026, replacing the 2015 edition. Transition deadline: September 30, 2029; ISO 9001:2015 may still be used by bodies not yet transitioned until then. The ISO 9001 2026 transition article covers the detail.

ISO 14001:2026 (environmental management systems). Published, replacing the 2015 edition. ASCB transition deadline: April 30, 2029; assessments may continue against the 2015 edition during the transition.
